Busy summer at SHIFT!
- The Open Day at the end of June was a great success. The response we had from parents has encouraged us to make Open Days a regular part of the SHIFT calendar and to invite parents and carers to reviews.
- In July we had a training and quality week where we set in motion the start of our Self Assessment Process. Sadly, our wonderful volunteer Sue Rogers left to take a post in education. Sue worked on a one-to-one basis with learners, helping with functional maths. We wish Sue well in her new job.
- August saw SHIFT in collaboration with the Children’s University, the Showroom and Studio of the North deliver our first Summer School. Participants with mentored support made a documentary, ‘Getting in on the Act’ about how you get into a career in media or the theatre. The Summer School encouraged participants to think outside the box about their own careers (see longer story).
- August also saw our Interactive tutor, Matt Henley move on to a full-time post at Norton College. A responsive trainer Matt was well liked by staff and students alike. Matt’s new role at Norton provides a strong link for students progressing onto Norton.
- Matt’s departure leads to a warm welcome to Vanessa Wells who worked as Edit Mentor on the Summer school. Vanessa is a welcome addition to the tutor team and joins us in September.
- The last piece of good news is that Matt Jay and Catherine Restarick will be employed at SHIFT until February 2012. Matt’s role is changing to encompass the website and data entry. Cat will take more of a lead role in reviews. We look forward to working with them over the next 6 months.
- Attendance has also reached a record high this week at 93%!
